Intercontinental Exchange and OKX Launch Blockchain Platform for Round-the-Clock Stock Token Trading

      Key Takeaways

      • Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, partnered with cryptocurrency exchange OKX to create OKXICE, a joint venture targeting tokenized equity trading.
      • The proposed platform would feature over 60 U.S. equities transformed into digital tokens, including shares of Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Microsoft.
      • The marketplace would operate continuously—24 hours daily, every day of the week—and settle transactions in stablecoins rather than traditional fiat currency.
      • Every digital token will represent one underlying share held in custody by a registered broker dealer.
      • Research from TD Securities suggests institutional adoption may face headwinds in the short term because of unclear regulatory frameworks.

A groundbreaking blockchain-powered marketplace could soon enable continuous trading of major U.S. stocks such as Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, and Microsoft. This innovative platform is being developed by OKXICE, a newly formed partnership between cryptocurrency platform OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, which operates the New York Stock Exchange.

Earlier this week, OKXICE submitted regulatory documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission. These filings outline the operational mechanics of the proposed trading system and identify which equities the venture intends to make available.

      Which Companies Will Be Available

The initial roster comprises more than 60 publicly traded corporations. Beyond prominent technology giants, the list encompasses Amazon, Alphabet, JPMorgan Chase, Walmart, Netflix, and Boeing.

Several blockchain and cryptocurrency-related enterprises also made the cut. Among them are Coinbase, Circle, Robinhood, Strategy, and Securitize.

Inclusion on the preliminary list doesn’t guarantee a company’s stock will ultimately appear on the platform. Each corporation has a 30-day period during which it can formally oppose the tokenization of its shares.

Cerebras has already exercised this right and filed an objection to its inclusion. Analysts from TD Securities emphasized that no ticker is definitively confirmed at this stage.

The Mechanics Behind Tokenized Share Trading

Rather than purchasing through conventional brokerage channels, market participants would acquire digital tokens representing shares of stock. According to the filing, each token corresponds to one authentic share maintained in custody by a registered broker dealer.

Individuals holding these tokens would retain identical privileges to traditional equity owners. These rights encompass dividend distributions and participation in shareholder votes.

Transactions on the venue would be denominated in stablecoins rather than United States dollars. OKXICE has designated three stablecoins for platform support: USDC, USDT, and USDG.

Unlike traditional exchanges, the platform won’t employ a conventional order book system that pairs buy and sell orders. Instead, tokens and stablecoins will reside in blockchain-native liquidity pools that participants trade with directly.

Purchasing tokens depletes them from the pool while simultaneously depositing stablecoins, which drives prices upward. Selling reverses this mechanism and exerts downward pressure on valuations.

These liquidity mechanisms are known as automated market makers. They rely on mathematical algorithms or active oversight from specialized trading firms to establish pricing.

According to TD Securities, the actively managed pool variant may prove more significant for equity trading than purely algorithmic alternatives. Market makers employing this approach can dynamically adjust pricing and holdings in response to live market conditions.

All transactions will execute on XLayer, a proprietary blockchain developed by OKX. The liquidity pool infrastructure will utilize technology from Uniswap, a prominent decentralized exchange protocol.

One fundamental distinction from traditional Wall Street operations is the absence of market closures. Activity would persist through nights, weekends, and public holidays, even when the Nasdaq remains offline.

Valuations during off-hours would be determined by trading activity within the platform’s liquidity pools. Prices wouldn’t simply freeze at the most recent Nasdaq closing levels.

User participation will mandate identity verification procedures. Anti-money laundering protocols will screen all prospective traders before account activation.

TD Securities indicated that the platform may struggle to attract significant institutional capital initially. The firm cited readily available access to conventional listed equities and regulatory ambiguity as primary obstacles.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s exemption permitting this trading model extends for five years rather than establishing permanent authorization. This temporary status could discourage major financial institutions from investing in infrastructure for a framework that might undergo revision.

Harvey Li, who established Tokenization Insight, suggested the platform’s true significance lies in demonstrating which tokenization approach works most effectively for bringing stocks onchain. He characterized OKXICE as potentially one of the earliest substantial experiments with this market architecture.

Andrew Cuomo, serving as OKXICE’s co-chair, described the initiative as progress toward an always-accessible global financial ecosystem. Star Xu, OKX’s founder and chief executive, expressed that tokenization has the potential to make public equity markets more inclusive and perpetually operational.
