BofA Predicts Mild Support for Dollar Amid Month-End Rebalancing

Bank of America (BofA) has indicated that their month-end rebalancing model suggests potential outflows from the euro and British pound into the U.S. dollar. The firm estimates that these foreign exchange rebalancing needs are based on a traditional 60/40 portfolio of global equities and bonds. Given the underperformance of the U.S. dollar against GBP and EUR-denominated assets in August, BofA anticipates a shift from GBP and EUR into the dollar.

As of this week, both EUR/USD and GBP/USD have seen declines, with the euro down 0.3% and the pound down 0.4%. These movements were primarily influenced by a drop observed on Wednesday during midday trading in Europe, coinciding with mixed economic data from the United States. Although the changes in currency values have been relatively modest, market participants are also preparing for a keynote speech by Federal Reserve Chair Warsh at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, which may overshadow month-end trading activities.

BofA's analysis suggests that while there may be some fluctuations as the month-end approaches, the overall impact of these flows in August is expected to be minimal. The firm emphasizes that any significant shifts in currency values will likely be influenced more by broader market events than by month-end rebalancing alone.
