Broadcom (AVGO) Shares Drop 3% Amid Surging Credit Default Swap Costs
Key Takeaways
- Credit default swaps for Broadcom’s five-year debt surged 28 basis points during August, exceeding movements at comparable firms such as Oracle and SpaceX.
- Bond yields on Broadcom’s 5.15% notes maturing in 2031 increased approximately 14 basis points last month.
- The semiconductor company is negotiating to guarantee portions of an AI financing arrangement exceeding $60 billion for clients like Anthropic.
- In a previous transaction this year, Broadcom underwrote the majority of a $35 billion financing deal with support from Apollo and Blackstone.
- JPMorgan analyst Tarek Hamid characterized these commitments as “phantom leverage,” cautioning that concealed AI-related debt obligations across the industry could eventually total trillions of dollars.
Shares of Broadcom (AVGO) retreated 2.6% during Monday’s trading session as credit markets signaled heightened anxiety regarding the semiconductor manufacturer’s increasingly prominent position in underwriting artificial intelligence infrastructure financing arrangements.
Bond yields for Broadcom’s 5.15% debt instruments with a 2031 maturity date climbed approximately 14 basis points throughout August. Meanwhile, five-year credit default swaps—essentially insurance contracts protecting against potential default—spiked 28 basis points during the identical timeframe. This increase outpaced comparable movements observed at Oracle or SpaceX.
The market weakness coincides with ongoing negotiations where Broadcom is discussing guaranteeing a segment of a financing package that surpasses $60 billion. This credit facility is designed to provide customers, notably Anthropic, with enhanced access to customized Broadcom semiconductor products.
According to the proposed framework, Broadcom would serve as guarantor for a subset of the senior secured debt obligations. This arrangement is intended to provide lenders with additional assurance when extending capital.
Such financial arrangements are familiar ground for Broadcom. Earlier in 2026, the semiconductor company guaranteed a substantial portion of a $35 billion credit package. Private equity giants Apollo Global Management and Blackstone participated in funding this transaction, which financed AI hardware leasing arrangements with Anthropic.
Understanding “Phantom Leverage”
This financing structure enables clients to expand AI infrastructure capabilities more rapidly than their individual balance sheets would otherwise permit. However, it simultaneously means Broadcom assumes financial risk that isn’t always transparently reflected in conventional debt metrics.
JPMorgan analyst Tarek Hamid labeled these types of financial commitments as “phantom leverage.” He cautioned that residual value guarantees, lease obligations, and debt backstop arrangements throughout the wider AI sector could ultimately accumulate to trillions of dollars in obscured liabilities.
This characterization is now drawing increased scrutiny from credit market participants monitoring Broadcom’s financial position.
Tony Trzcinka, who manages investment-grade portfolios at Impax Asset Management, informed Bloomberg that the spike in Broadcom’s credit default swap pricing reflects company-specific balance sheet concerns rather than a generalized retreat from AI-sector investments.
Vulnerability During Economic Headwinds
The primary apprehension centers on potential scenarios where AI capital expenditure decelerates. Should customers encounter financial difficulties, Broadcom may face simultaneous obligations to honor guarantees precisely when semiconductor demand contracts.
This dual exposure is generating unease among bond market participants. While the risk isn’t immediately pressing, the magnitude of exposure continues expanding with each successive transaction.
Despite credit market concerns, Wall Street equity analysts maintain a predominantly bullish outlook. AVGO holds a Strong Buy consensus rating derived from 24 Buy recommendations, three Hold ratings, and zero Sell calls issued over the preceding three months.
The consensus price target stands at $509.30, suggesting potential upside of approximately 42% relative to present valuation levels.
