Central Banks' Case for Gold Diversification Strengthened by Geopolitical Risks

Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel emphasized the importance of gold diversification for central banks during the London Bullion Market Association's annual conference in Sorrento, Italy. He cited ongoing geopolitical tensions and high government debt levels as significant factors driving the need for increased gold reserves. Nagel noted that physical gold carries no counterparty risk and cannot be frozen by sanctions, unlike foreign securities and deposits, making it a safer asset for central banks.

Despite rising bond yields making government debt more appealing to reserve managers, Nagel argued that the structural case for gold remains strong. The Bundesbank, which holds over 3,500 tonnes of gold, is the second-largest official gold holder globally. Other officials, including Bank of Italy Deputy Governor Sergio Nicoletti Altimari, echoed Nagel's sentiments, describing gold as a safe haven asset and highlighting a shift in market dynamics since 2022 due to increased buying from emerging-market central banks.

However, consultancy Metals Focus predicts a slowdown in central bank gold demand, estimating a decline of about 15% this year to approximately 720 tonnes. This forecast suggests that gold may become more dependent on investment demand for price recovery, even as the endorsements from major European gold holders indicate that reserve diversification will continue to support demand in the long term.
