New Zealand Business Confidence Rises to 40% Amid Economic Optimism

Business confidence in New Zealand has surged to a net 40% in the September quarter, a significant increase from a net 14% in the previous quarter, according to the latest Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER). Despite this optimism, firms reported flat to slightly weaker domestic trading, with a net 1% indicating a decline in their own business activity during the same period.

Confidence improved across all sectors, with retailers showing the highest optimism at a net 57%, even as they faced challenges such as falling new orders and deteriorating profitability. The building sector also turned positive, with a net 46% expecting better conditions, although concerns about a flat housing pipeline persist. Manufacturers and service providers reported stronger demand, contributing to the overall positive sentiment.

Investment intentions have increased, with many firms planning to invest in buildings and machinery, despite a net 5% of firms reducing staff in the last quarter. The NZIER noted that while firms are optimistic about the future, they are also facing headwinds from rising oil prices due to renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, which could impact broader inflation and economic recovery in New Zealand.
