Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 Reach Record Highs Amid Mixed Economic Signals

The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 indices closed at record levels on October 5, 2026, as U.S. stocks experienced gains despite rising longer-term Treasury yields and a strengthening U.S. dollar. The Nasdaq Composite finished at 27,477.31, up 286.45 points, while the Nasdaq 100 rose to 31,076.44, an increase of 268.51 points. This performance reflects ongoing investor interest in technology and artificial intelligence sectors, even as concerns about inflation and borrowing costs persist.

Economic indicators presented a mixed picture. The ISM Services PMI for September reported a slight decline to 54.9, below the expected 55.2, but still indicating expansion. Business activity and new orders showed a decrease, while employment improved slightly. Price pressures remained elevated, with the index for prices rising to its highest level since July 2022. These factors suggest that while growth continues, inflation remains a concern for policymakers.

In the currency markets, the U.S. dollar strengthened against six of the seven major currencies, with notable gains against the New Zealand dollar. The euro faced challenges due to political uncertainty in France, which contributed to a widening borrowing-cost premium over Germany. Meanwhile, crude oil prices fell after initial gains driven by geopolitical tensions, settling lower as conflicting reports about Saudi energy infrastructure emerged. The market's focus will now shift to upcoming Federal Reserve minutes, which may provide further insights into the balance between employment data and inflation concerns.
