Bank of Japan's Ueda Addresses Market Speculation on Rate Hikes

Kazuo Ueda, the Governor of the Bank of Japan (BoJ), delivered significant remarks at the National Securities Convention in Tokyo, marking his first major public address since the central bank raised its policy rate to 1.25% in September. This increase was the first in over three decades, and traders are closely monitoring Ueda's comments for indications of potential further rate hikes during the upcoming October policy meeting.

Market sentiment currently leans against an immediate follow-up hike, with estimates suggesting a one in four chance of such an outcome. The mixed signals from recent BoJ communications have contributed to this uncertainty. While minutes from the July meeting indicated a hawkish stance among board members, the summary of opinions from the September meeting suggested a more cautious approach, with calls for restraint on additional hikes.

Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida also spoke recently, emphasizing the impact of artificial intelligence on economic activity and inflation. He described AI as a positive demand shock that is exerting upward pressure on prices, although he cautioned about potential risks if expected profits do not materialize. Following Uchida's remarks, the USD/JPY exchange rate briefly dipped before recovering, reflecting the market's reaction to the ongoing discussions surrounding monetary policy.
