China Releases Four PMIs, Impacting Australian Dollar Trading

China publishes four Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reports each month, which are crucial for traders, particularly those dealing with the Australian dollar (AUD). These reports include the official NBS Manufacturing PMI, the NBS Non-Manufacturing PMI, the private Caixin Manufacturing PMI, and the Caixin Services PMI. Each index provides insights into different sectors of the economy, with the manufacturing data often eliciting the most immediate reactions from traders due to its direct correlation with heavy industry and construction, which are significant for Australian commodity exports.

The NBS Non-Manufacturing PMI's construction sub-index is particularly relevant as it reflects activity in the Chinese property sector, influencing demand for Australian iron ore and coal. Meanwhile, the private Caixin services survey focuses more on consumer-facing businesses, offering a different perspective on household spending trends. This week, the NBS Manufacturing PMI rose to 49.8 from 49.2, while the Non-Manufacturing PMI remained unchanged at 49.0, indicating a divergence between manufacturing and services sectors.

Traders often look for confirmation when the manufacturing and services data from both the official and private surveys diverge. The interplay between these indices can significantly affect AUD trading strategies. For instance, if both manufacturing and services data move in the same direction, it builds confidence in the AUD trade. However, when they diverge, traders may seek additional confirmation before making decisions. Today's private manufacturing survey is anticipated to show further improvement, which will provide additional context for traders.
