China Requests Iran's Assistance to Control Houthi Forces Amid Saudi Concerns

China has made a private request to Iran, asking for its assistance in managing the military activities of Yemen's Houthi forces. This request follows an appeal from Saudi Arabia, which has expressed concerns over the Houthis' expanding control along Yemen's Red Sea coast, a region critical for oil exports and shipping routes.

Sources indicate that Saudi Arabia sought China's intervention after the Houthi offensive intensified, posing a significant threat to its oil infrastructure. In response, China has publicly advocated for restraint and dialogue while also emphasizing the importance of safe navigation in the region. However, the private communication to Iran reportedly urged Tehran to leverage its influence over the Houthis to mitigate the conflict's escalation.

The Houthis, who maintain close ties with Iran, have received substantial support from Tehran, including weapons and tactical guidance, despite Iran's public denial of being a direct proxy for the group. The recent request from China appears to be a strategic move aimed at de-escalating tensions, which has contributed to a decline in oil prices following the announcement.
