China's September PMIs Expected to Show Modest Improvement Ahead of Holiday

China is set to release its September purchasing managers' indexes (PMIs) on September 30, with both official and private-sector surveys scheduled for publication before the country enters a week-long holiday starting October 1. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) will announce its manufacturing and non-manufacturing PMIs at 01:30 GMT, while the private RatingDog surveys will follow shortly after at 01:45 GMT.

Forecasts suggest a slight recovery in the official manufacturing PMI, expected to rise to 50.1 from 49.8, indicating a return to expansion territory. However, the NBS non-manufacturing PMI is projected to remain below the critical 50 mark, with an anticipated reading of 49.3, up from 49.0. In contrast, the RatingDog manufacturing PMI is expected to show a modest increase to 51.6, while its services index is forecast to decline slightly to 51.1.

The release of these PMIs is particularly significant as they provide the last comprehensive insight into Chinese economic activity before the holiday. Market participants, especially those trading in China-sensitive assets such as the yuan, the Australian dollar, and industrial commodities, will closely monitor the data for indications of economic stabilization or continued softness. A positive manufacturing reading could bolster confidence, while a miss on the official figures may heighten concerns about economic demand.
