ECB President Lagarde Advocates Measured Response to Inflation
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has emphasized the need for a measured response to address rising inflation in the eurozone. Speaking on the current economic landscape, Lagarde noted that while growth has been broad-based across most countries and sectors, the outlook remains highly uncertain. She highlighted that the manufacturing sector is performing solidly and the labor market continues to show resilience, despite significant technological advancements that have not yet translated into reduced unemployment rates.
Lagarde indicated that inflation is expected to be higher for 2027 and 2028 than previously anticipated, although there are currently no signs of it becoming entrenched. She reiterated the ECB's commitment to maintaining a balanced monetary policy, which was outlined earlier this year. The term 'measured response' reflects the ECB's strategy to respond appropriately to economic shocks while keeping inflation in check.
Following Lagarde's comments, the euro experienced a decline, dropping 25 pips to 1.1364, marking a low point for the currency. This reaction underscores the market's sensitivity to the ECB's monetary policy direction as it navigates the complexities of inflation and economic growth.
