Firelight DeFi Protocol Goes Live on Flare, Automatically Converting FXRP Stakes Into Active Cover
TLDR
- Flare’s Firelight cover protocol launched October 6, converting all previously staked FXRP positions into active protection backing without user action required.
- Staker funds now protect designated vaults from specific failures, beginning with two Sentora vault products for USD and real-world assets.
- Exit timelines now span 30 to 60 days, with reward accrual stopping immediately upon unstaking request.
- Initial coverage orders totaled $38 million in protected value, generating approximately $56,913.70 in premium fees.
- XRP dropped to $1.32 intraday on October 14 following higher-than-anticipated inflation reports.
Firelight, a decentralized cover protocol operating on Flare Network, launched October 6 with an automatic transition that placed existing FXRP stake positions into its active protection framework.
FXRP represents an XRP-backed token native to the Flare ecosystem. Users who had staked the token prior to launch required no manual intervention for their holdings to begin supporting coverage.
The protocol enables cryptocurrency holders to stake assets that shield DeFi vaults from specified failure scenarios. Stakers receive compensation through fees paid by vault operators seeking protection.
Sentora’s USD Protected Vault and Protected RWA Vaults represent the initial live implementations. Firelight has also established a partnership with Veda, which provides vault infrastructure services.
How Cover and Claims Work
The protocol provides protection against smart contract exploits, oracle malfunctions, governance attacks, bad debt accumulation, depeg events, and redemption system failures. Every incident undergoes review before any compensation is distributed.
A Risk Consortium comprising five firms—Hypernative, Native, Credora, Cyfrin, and GFX Labs—validates claims. Security partner ZeroShadow produces an initial exploit analysis.
When claims receive confirmation, the protocol first deploys funds from a protocol-controlled stablecoin reserve known as the First-Loss Buffer. Any shortfall is then distributed proportionally across staker positions based on their size.
According to CryptoSlate data, the wallet identified as Firelight’s buffer contained approximately 1,000,002.59 USDT0 as of October 14. Compounded rewards that have been added to staker positions carry identical loss exposure as initial deposits.
Longer Wait to Withdraw
Firelight’s current framework requires 30 to 60 days for complete exits. Vault reward accumulation ceases the moment a user submits an unstaking request.
The staked capital continues supporting active coverage through the remainder of the ongoing 30-day cycle. Throughout the subsequent period, claims connected to the earlier coverage timeframe can still diminish the final withdrawal amount.
Firelight’s announcement stated that stakers continue earning until full exit completion. However, the detailed withdrawal specifications and vault contract code terminate new reward generation upon unstaking request submission.
The protocol’s first three coverage orders executed on October 6. These combined to allocate $38 million in protection and generated roughly $56,913.70 in premium revenue.
Two orders protected Sentora’s vault offerings: $2.5 million for the USD Protected Vault and $5 million for the RWA Vault. Premium payments received in stablecoins undergo conversion to FXRP before distribution to staker positions.
On-chain records indicate 9,245.46 FXRP transferred to the vault from premium conversions on October 6, 8, and 12. An additional 14,045.40 FXRP was logged as incentive distributions across those same dates.
As a separate measure, Firelight allocated a one-time pool of 230,000 FXRP for early participants, distributed according to accumulated Firelight Points. This represents a fixed budget rather than an ongoing income stream.
Sentora serves as Firelight’s incubator, while Sentinel Labs handles ongoing maintenance. The protocol secured $8 million in seed capital led by Gumi Cryptos Capital, and received audits from OpenZeppelin, Coinspect, and 0xMacro.
DefiLlama reported approximately $69.7 million in total value locked within Firelight as of October 14. Blockchain explorer data showed roughly 51.13 million FXRP held in the vault, including positions in the withdrawal queue.
That same day, XRP declined to an intraday low of $1.32 after inflation metrics exceeded market forecasts. A reduced XRP valuation directly decreases the dollar-denominated capital supporting Firelight’s coverage capacity.
