France Faces Increased Fiscal Pressure as Bond Yields Rise

France is experiencing a shift in market perception, with investors now demanding a higher premium to lend to the country compared to Italy. This change is evident in the bond market, where the spread between French and German 10-year government bonds has widened significantly, reaching levels not seen since the euro-area debt crisis in 2012. As of October 1, 2026, the French spread exceeded 140 basis points, indicating that investors are increasingly concerned about France's fiscal stability amid persistent deficits and political uncertainty.

The country's public debt has risen to approximately 119% of GDP, with projections suggesting it could surpass 120% in 2027. France plans to issue a record €340 billion in medium- and long-term debt next year, coinciding with the need to refinance older bonds at higher interest rates. This situation is compounded by weak economic growth, as evidenced by a 0.2% contraction in GDP in the first quarter of 2026 and stagnant growth in the second quarter. The unemployment rate has also risen to 8.3%, further complicating the fiscal landscape.

The implications of France's fiscal challenges extend beyond its borders, potentially affecting the euro and financial conditions across the eurozone. Higher borrowing costs for the French government could lead to increased corporate borrowing costs and tighter financial conditions throughout Europe. The European Central Bank may face challenges in justifying intervention to stabilize French yields, as the current market repricing reflects genuine fiscal concerns rather than irrational investor behavior. As a result, the situation in France is becoming a critical macroeconomic risk for the entire euro area, warranting close monitoring by investors and policymakers alike.
