Australia's Treasurer Warns of Economic Impact from Iran War

Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers has labeled the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran as an economic disaster, attributing rising inflation and interest rates globally to the war. In a recent interview, he emphasized that the conflict is significantly affecting the cost of living in Australia and worldwide, with energy prices being a primary driver of inflation.

Chalmers noted that the Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates to a 15-year high, largely due to increased energy costs stemming from the war. He indicated that while government spending growth has slowed, it is not the main factor contributing to the current inflationary pressures. He also mentioned that rising global bond yields will add billions to the cost of servicing public debt, complicating budgetary considerations ahead of the mid-year budget update.

Despite these challenges, Chalmers expressed optimism that Australia would not enter a recession, although he acknowledged that the war is impacting global economic growth. He is set to travel to Japan to meet with Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and discuss shared concerns over rising energy prices and bond yields, as well as opportunities for investment and fuel security.
