US Withdraws B-1 Bombers from UK Base Amid Security Concerns

The United States has withdrawn all B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, a British air base located northwest of London, due to security concerns related to suspected plots against the facility. This decision marks a significant shift for the US, which has utilized the base as a hub for launching bomber strikes on Iran. Approximately a dozen B-1 bombers were stationed at Fairford prior to their return to home stations in the US, where they remain prepared for global strike missions, according to the Pentagon.

The withdrawal follows the arrest of six individuals in connection with a foiled attack on the base, which US and British officials believe was linked to Iran. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated strong evidence of Iranian involvement, while the British Ministry of Defence has declined to comment on the situation. The suspects were released on bail as the investigation continues, raising questions about the sophistication of the planned attack and the extent of direct Iranian involvement.

US officials reported that a branch of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had allegedly recruited UK nationals for a multi-step plot targeting the bombers and personnel at Fairford. The Pentagon has stated that operational security prevented them from confirming the movements of the aircraft in real-time, but emphasized that the global strike capability of the US remains intact despite the relocation of the bombers. This incident highlights the expanding reach of the Iran conflict into allied military infrastructure in Europe, prompting close scrutiny from defense planners and energy markets as the investigation unfolds.
