Australia's Services Sector Growth Slows Amid Rising Prices and Job Cuts

The growth of Australia's services sector slowed in September, with the S&P Global Australia Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) registering a decline to 51.9 from 53.2 in August. This marks the slowest expansion in three months, although the index remains above the neutral mark of 50, indicating continued growth. The Composite Output Index, which includes both services and manufacturing, also fell to 51.3 from 52.7, reflecting a deeper contraction in manufacturing activity.

The slowdown in the services sector is accompanied by rising price pressures and a return to job cuts for the first time since May. Employment in the services sector decreased marginally, attributed to slower order growth and concerns over costs. Despite a slight increase in new business and a marginal rise in export orders, overall business confidence has dipped to a three-month low, raising concerns about the economic outlook.

Input costs have risen due to higher fuel and labor expenses, leading to increased output prices. Both input cost and output price inflation have accelerated and remain above long-term averages. This inflationary pressure could influence the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) monetary policy, as the central bank may need to maintain a hawkish stance to address persistent inflation, despite the signs of a softening economy.
