Global Smartphone Shipments Decline 20% in Third Quarter of 2026

Global smartphone shipments experienced a significant decline of 20% in the third quarter of 2026, marking the lowest level for this period since 2012, according to data from Counterpoint Research. The downturn is attributed to the increasing demand for memory chips by artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, which has led to a squeeze on supplies for smartphone manufacturers.

Samsung maintained its position as the market leader with a 23% share, closely followed by Apple, which holds a 22% share of the global market. In contrast, Xiaomi faced a steep decline in shipments, dropping over 30% as manufacturers shifted their focus from sales volume to profit margins amid rising production costs and retail prices.
