Gold Tumbles to Three-Week Bottom as Fed Hike Odds Surge to 70%
Key Takeaways
- The precious metal has declined for four consecutive trading sessions, reaching its lowest point in three weeks near $4,327 per ounce
- An appreciating U.S. dollar combined with climbing Treasury yields continue to weigh on gold valuations
- Market participants now anticipate a 70% likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate increase during the September 15-16 policy meeting
- American military operations against Iran have elevated oil prices, intensifying inflation worries
- The yellow metal breached its 200-day moving average, representing a significant technical threshold
Gold valuations have continued their downward trajectory throughout this trading week, plunging to the weakest position in over three weeks amid dollar appreciation and mounting anticipation for a Federal Reserve rate adjustment.
During current trading, spot gold prices hovered near $4,327 per ounce, with futures contracts declining 0.5% to settle at $4,373. The precious metal has surrendered approximately 6% of its value during the week.
Rate Increase Speculation Pressures Precious Metals
Multiple factors are converging to create headwinds for gold. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh conveyed a restrictive monetary policy stance during last week’s Jackson Hole symposium, indicating that borrowing costs may remain elevated for an extended period.
Fed Governor Michael Barr reinforced these concerns during Tuesday’s remarks. He emphasized that central bank officials must remain prepared to implement rate increases should inflation fail to moderate, pointing out that price growth has exceeded the Fed’s 2% objective for over five years.

According to CME’s FedWatch tool, market participants are currently assigning a 70% probability to a rate hike occurring at the upcoming September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee gathering.
Elevated interest rates typically create challenges for gold. Since the metal generates no income stream, it loses appeal relative to yield-bearing instruments like bonds and interest-bearing deposit accounts.
Geopolitical Conflict Elevates Energy Prices
Recent American military operations targeting Iran on Tuesday introduced additional market uncertainty. Iranian authorities announced retaliatory measures, representing a significant intensification following approximately one month of comparative stability.
Brent crude traded around $94 per barrel while U.S. crude remained just beneath $90. Market observers are monitoring whether extended hostilities might interrupt petroleum shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Elevated oil prices contribute directly to inflationary pressures. This complicates the Federal Reserve’s ability to maintain current rates or implement cuts, consequently maintaining downward pressure on gold.
The U.S. Dollar Index advanced 0.1% to reach 99.73. A more robust dollar elevates gold’s cost for international buyers utilizing alternative currencies, potentially reducing global demand.
Treasury Market Retreat Compounds Headwinds
International government bond yields have similarly advanced. Thirty-year U.S. Treasury yields climbed above 5.28%, returning to levels observed prior to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement of enhanced bond buyback programs on August 19.
That policy initiative had temporarily boosted gold by approximately 10% during August, marking its strongest monthly gain since January. The rally mirrored apprehensions regarding expanding government debt and currency devaluation, commonly referenced as the debasement trade.
Gold additionally fell beneath its 200-day moving average during the current week, a threshold closely monitored by chart analysts as an indicator of sustained price direction.
Market strategists at Sucden Financial indicated that Friday’s U.S. nonfarm payrolls release will probably dictate gold’s subsequent trajectory. Weaker employment figures could attract renewed buying interest, whereas another robust reading might propel yields higher and prolong gold’s downturn.
