US Dollar Secures Weekly Gains Amid Declining Rate Hike Expectations and Surging Crude Prices
Key Highlights
- The greenback slips modestly on Friday but maintains weekly gains
- July producer price data showed no increase, lowering Federal Reserve tightening prospects
- Probability of a September Fed rate increase falls to 35% from 55% one week prior
- Japanese currency poised for 1% weekly decline even with intervention backing
- Crude markets jump 4% for the week following warnings of sustained Iranian port blockade
The greenback experienced a modest decline on Friday yet continued its trajectory toward a weekly advance following a series of benign inflation reports that diminished expectations for imminent Federal Reserve monetary tightening.
The US Dollar Index retreated 0.1% to approximately 99.82 during Friday’s trading session. While showing a minor daily decrease, the benchmark has maintained strength throughout the week.

Data released Thursday revealed that the producer price index registered no change in July. This followed earlier reports showing consumer inflation advancing 3.4% annually, while the core measure moderated to 2.5%.
The collective reports have diminished monetary tightening expectations. Current market pricing indicates merely a 35% probability of Fed policy tightening at September’s meeting, a significant drop from the 55% likelihood assessed one week earlier, per CME FedWatch data.
Employment figures from the prior week reinforced this narrative. The comprehensive dataset has prompted market participants to reduce their expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening measures.
Energy Market Rally Supports Greenback
Oil prices experienced substantial gains this week, climbing approximately 4%, following remarks from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth indicating American military capability to maintain an Iranian port blockade without time constraints.
This action represents a component of President Donald Trump’s approach to maintain economic leverage against Iran during ongoing diplomatic stalemate.
Transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for international energy shipments, continues facing significant interruption. Elevated crude prices are sustaining inflationary concerns notwithstanding the subdued domestic economic data.
The crude rally also elevated Treasury yields. Thursday’s 30-year Treasury auction delivered the highest yield recorded since 2001. The 30-year rate advanced to 5.228%, while the 10-year benchmark increased to 4.659%.
Elevated yields signal mounting apprehension regarding American fiscal sustainability, introducing additional complexity into currency market dynamics.
Japanese Currency Weakens Despite Official Support
The Japanese currency declined Friday, with the dollar trading near 159.20 yen. The yen is tracking toward a 1% weekly loss.
Japan’s currency had appreciated following coordinated US-Japan market intervention during late July and early August, though those advances have subsequently reversed.
Market participants are monitoring the 160 yen threshold carefully. Breaching that level could prompt renewed intervention from Japanese monetary officials.
Anticipation for a Bank of Japan policy rate increase in September has intensified, though market observers note the central bank would require a distinctly aggressive posture to provide sustainable yen strength.
Meanwhile, China’s yuan remained unchanged, while Australia’s dollar gained 0.2%.
The dollar’s weekly advancement demonstrates the equilibrium between diminishing Federal Reserve tightening expectations weighing on the currency, and elevated crude prices alongside fiscal concerns providing underlying strength.
