India Suspends Bulk Gold ETF Purchases Ahead of Diwali

Several major Indian mutual funds, including Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, UTI Mutual Fund, and HDFC Mutual Fund, have announced a suspension of bulk subscriptions to gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) just as the country approaches its peak gold buying season for Diwali. This decision follows discussions with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the country's market regulator, although the reasons for the suspension were not disclosed. Importantly, redemptions of existing ETF investments remain unaffected by this move.

India, the world's second-largest consumer of gold, typically sees a surge in demand during the festive seasons of Dussehra and Diwali, when purchasing gold is considered auspicious. However, the recent suspension of bulk ETF purchases could limit one of the key channels for new investment flows into gold, which had previously seen increased activity during festive periods. While physical gold purchases through jewelers are still permitted, the curbs on ETFs may impact overall demand.

The Indian rupee has faced pressure this year due to rising oil prices, which have increased the country's import bill, and significant foreign selling of Indian equities. Earlier this year, the government raised import duties on gold and silver in response to these economic pressures. In September, gold imports fell to $1.8 billion from $2.3 billion in August, indicating a potential shift in buying patterns as the festive season approaches. The market is now left to assess how these restrictions will affect gold demand and prices in the coming weeks.
