Intel (INTC) Stock Tumbles Nearly 5% as Treasury Yields Pressure Semiconductor Sector
Key Takeaways
- Intel shares plunged nearly 5% during Tuesday’s premarket hours, reflecting widespread market weakness rather than company-specific developments.
- The semiconductor benchmark PHLX Index had just confirmed a fresh bull market after climbing 21% from its late July bottom, escaping bear territory in merely 21 days.
- Escalating Treasury yields and crude oil costs sparked Tuesday’s retreat, with the 30-year bond yield reaching a 19-year peak of 5.310%.
- Bank of America maintains its Buy recommendation on Intel with a $145 target price, forecasting Intel Foundry could generate approximately $40 billion in revenue by decade’s end.
- Wall Street analysts assign Intel a Hold consensus based on 50 ratings, with a mean target price of $110.
Shares of Intel Corp (INTC) tumbled nearly 5% during Tuesday’s premarket hours, declining to $98.69, as technology and semiconductor equities faced substantial selling pressure.
The drop wasn’t triggered by any company-specific developments. Nasdaq futures declined 1.24% while S&P 500 futures retreated 0.41%, as market participants reduced exposure to higher-volatility equities before the opening bell.
The weakness stemmed from escalating Treasury yields and crude oil costs. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield closed at a 19-year peak of 5.310% and continued climbing to 5.320% early Tuesday morning.
Intel wasn’t the only casualty. Marvell (MRVL) and Coherent (COHR) both dropped over 6% in premarket activity. Micron (MU) also declined more than 4%.
The timing carries some irony. The PHLX Semiconductor Index, SOX, confirmed a fresh bull market Monday after rallying 21% from its July 29 trough. This escape from bear market status required only 21 days, marking the swiftest recovery since March 2020 and significantly faster than the historical norm of 54 days.
Intel had advanced 26% throughout that rally, while Micron soared 37% and Nvidia added 18%. The surprise performer was Credo Technology, which surged 59% during that period.
Tuesday appears to mark a challenging beginning for the newly established bull market.
Bank of America Maintains Optimistic Outlook on Foundry Operations
Despite the recent weakness, Bank of America continues supporting Intel’s long-range strategy. Analyst Vivek Arya indicated Intel’s approximately $20 billion capital raise demonstrates management’s conviction in both internal requirements and external foundry client interest.
The bank anticipates Intel securing 8% to 10% of an estimated $380 billion wafer foundry marketplace by 2030. It forecasts Intel Foundry sales expanding from approximately $1.1 billion in 2026 to nearly $40 billion by decade’s end. Bank of America reduced its target to $145 from $160 on August 12, while maintaining its Buy recommendation.
UBS adjusted its target downward to $112 on the same date, retaining a Neutral position.
Chart Analysis
Intel currently trades 40.2% above its 200-day simple moving average of $70.45, supporting the broader uptrend. However, it remains 9.6% beneath its 50-day SMA of $109.24, indicating near-term pressure.
The 20-day SMA of $97.15 trades below the 50-day SMA, suggesting additional short-term vulnerability. The relative strength index registers a neutral reading of 52.50.
Critical support level to monitor sits at $89.50, where purchasing interest has previously emerged.
Intel receives a Hold consensus from 50 Wall Street analysts, with a mean price target of $110. Estimates span from $71 to $155.
Intel’s Benzinga Edge Momentum score registers at 98.66, demonstrating the stock’s impressive performance prior to Tuesday’s premarket weakness.
