Interest Rate Expectations Steady Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Interest rate expectations have remained stable across major central banks this week, as a lack of significant economic developments has prevented traders from altering their forecasts. The primary source of market volatility stemmed from geopolitical events, particularly concerning tensions between the United States and Iran. Reports suggesting that former President Donald Trump was considering military action against Iran led to a temporary hawkish shift in market pricing. However, Trump's subsequent comments on social media, which indicated a preference for diplomatic discussions, helped to alleviate some of these tensions and contributed to a decline in oil prices.

In Canada, a disappointing employment report for September, which showed a loss of 68,300 jobs compared to an anticipated increase of 9,200, has notably impacted interest rate expectations. This data has reduced the likelihood of a rate hike by the Bank of Canada at its upcoming meeting, with the probability dropping to approximately 21% from 42% prior to the report's release. The weaker employment figures suggest less urgency for the central bank to tighten monetary policy in the near term.

Looking ahead, geopolitical developments will continue to influence interest rate expectations, particularly as markets await Iran's response to a recent U.S. proposal. A favorable diplomatic outcome could lead to lower oil prices and a shift towards more dovish monetary policies across central banks. Conversely, renewed tensions may reinforce hawkish expectations. Additionally, the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is anticipated to have significant implications for the Federal Reserve's policy direction, with potential impacts on global interest rate pricing.
