Morgan Stanley Investment Management Sees Rising Bond Yields as a Sign of Economic Strength

Morgan Stanley Investment Management, which oversees approximately $2 trillion in assets, interprets the recent increase in U.S. Treasury yields as an indication of robust economic growth rather than a sign of fiscal distress. Jim Caron, Chief Investment Officer of the Portfolio Solutions Group, stated that the rise in yields reflects resilient nominal growth, which combines real economic expansion with inflation, currently estimated at about 6.5% in the United States. He noted that strong labor markets and productivity gains are contributing to this growth, helping to alleviate inflationary pressures.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield reached a peak of around 5.3% on October 5, 2026, before easing to approximately 5.1%. Caron emphasized that this movement in yields is a natural response to the pace of nominal growth and does not signal an impending economic slowdown. He expressed confidence that U.S. equities can continue to absorb higher yields as long as corporate earnings remain strong, with expectations for the third-quarter earnings season being particularly optimistic.

Morgan Stanley's investment strategy includes an underweight position in duration and a preference for credit, anticipating that long-dated Treasuries will remain under pressure. The firm favors U.S. and Japanese equities over European stocks, citing stronger nominal growth in Japan. Caron also mentioned that potential Democratic gains in the upcoming midterm elections could influence investment opportunities, particularly favoring established companies in sectors like artificial intelligence.
