New York Fed President Williams Signals Potential for One More Rate Hike in 2026

John Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, indicated that if the U.S. economy continues to meet expectations, one additional interest rate hike may occur before the end of 2026. Following the recent rate increase in September, Williams emphasized that there is no immediate urgency for further tightening, suggesting a measured approach to monetary policy.

Williams highlighted the strong momentum of the U.S. economy, projecting a GDP growth rate of 2.25% for this year and an unemployment rate of 4% through 2027. He also forecasted inflation at 3.5% for 2026, with a goal of returning to the Fed's target of 2% by 2028. He stressed the importance of preventing high inflation from becoming entrenched and noted that the Fed's policies can mitigate the long-term effects of supply shocks.

Additionally, Williams pointed out that investments in artificial intelligence are increasingly influencing inflation trends. His comments have led to a slight decline in U.S. two-year Treasury yields, which fell by 2.5 basis points to 4.90%. As a permanent voter on the Federal Open Market Committee, his insights are closely watched by market participants and policymakers alike.
