Novo Nordisk (NVO) Stock Drops on Morgan Stanley Downgrade Amid Patent Concerns
Key Takeaways
- Morgan Stanley cut Novo Nordisk’s rating from Equal-weight to Underweight while maintaining a 250 Danish crown price target
- Shares declined approximately 2.4% during early trading in Copenhagen
- Semaglutide represents 75% of the company’s revenue and confronts significant patent expiration challenges in the early-to-mid 2030s
- The investment bank projects 2-3% revenue and EBIT expansion in 2027, trailing the European pharmaceutical industry average
- Analysts identify minimal positive catalysts before the company’s capital markets event on September 21
Morgan Stanley issued a downgrade for Novo Nordisk to Underweight, triggering an immediate market response. Shares fell approximately 2.4% during Copenhagen trading sessions after the announcement.
In a research note, analysts under the leadership of Thibault Boutherin argued that the stock’s present trading levels don’t adequately account for its modest medium-term expansion trajectory. Their 250 Danish crown price objective suggests potential downside exceeding 10% from recent closing levels.
The primary issue centers on semaglutide, the compound powering both Ozempic and Wegovy. This single ingredient generated 75% of Novo’s entire revenue base in 2026.
This heavy concentration creates substantial risk as the early-to-mid 2030s approach, when semaglutide’s patents expire across Europe and the United States. According to Morgan Stanley’s analysis, the medication will still represent 59% of total sales in 2031, precisely when exclusivity protections start eroding.
Underwhelming Expansion Projections
The investment bank anticipates 2-3% growth in both revenue and EBIT for 2027, matching consensus estimates. However, looking from 2027 through 2030, Morgan Stanley forecasts merely 4% compound annual growth for revenue and EBIT alike.
These figures trail the broader European pharmaceutical sector, where the bank anticipates 4% revenue expansion and 7% EBIT growth during the identical timeframe.
While Morgan Stanley does expect Novo’s oral obesity product line to generate $10 billion annually by 2031, analysts cautioned that this milestone “will not be enough to offset pricing and competitive headwinds.”
A proprietary Morgan Stanley study involving 200 primary care doctors revealed increasing utilization of GLP-1 medications across the board. Nevertheless, the survey also indicated anticipated market share erosion for Novo during the coming 18 months, driven by Eli Lilly’s existing portfolio and its forthcoming retatrutide, anticipated to launch in 2027.
Pricing Metrics and Upcoming Investor Event
From a valuation perspective, Novo currently trades at 12.5 times projected 2027 earnings. This represents a 7% discount versus European large-cap pharmaceutical companies, yet commands a 35% premium compared to global competitors confronting comparable patent challenges, including Sanofi and GSK.
Morgan Stanley specifically highlighted this disparity, emphasizing the premium becomes “more pronounced” relative to GSK at 10x and Sanofi at 8x multiples.
The company’s capital markets day is slated for September 21. Morgan Stanley anticipates management will reconfirm its oral obesity roadmap and deliver progress reports on business development initiatives spanning MASH and chronic kidney disease treatments.
According to the research team, they perceive “limited scope for major announcements” during this presentation.
A potential positive scenario for shareholders would emerge if oral obesity medications secure greater patient penetration than currently anticipated and demonstrate stronger resilience against competitive pressures and generic alternatives than present models suggest.
Morgan Stanley’s Underweight designation signals the analysts’ expectation that the stock will underperform relative to industry peers going forward.
