Nvidia (NVDA) Earnings Take Center Stage as U.S.-Canada Trade War Escalates
Key Takeaways
- U.S. equity futures declined Monday following the weekend breakdown of trade negotiations with Canada
- A 50% tariff on approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods went into effect immediately
- Canadian PM Mark Carney pledged to retaliate with equivalent tariffs beginning September 8
- Wednesday’s Nvidia quarterly results represent a critical bellwether for artificial intelligence sector momentum
- Escalating U.S.-Iran tensions are driving energy costs upward amid inflation already at 3.4%
Investors kicked off the trading week navigating turbulent waters as a deteriorating trade relationship with Canada, climbing oil prices, and anticipation surrounding Nvidia’s upcoming financial disclosure weighed on sentiment.
Equity index futures displayed weakness during Monday’s pre-market session. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked downward, while contracts for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq declined 0.1% and 0.3% respectively.
The previous week concluded with losses across the board for major benchmarks. The Dow Jones retreated 0.85%, the S&P 500 shed 1.4%, and the Nasdaq tumbled 2.1%.
Trade Negotiations With Canada Reach Impasse
Diplomatic and economic discussions between Washington and Ottawa broke down late Friday evening. In response, the United States imposed a 50% levy on roughly $20 billion in Canadian imports, with the measure taking effect immediately after midnight on Saturday.
UPDATE: The 50% U.S. tariffs on $20 BILLION of Canadian goods are now officially in effect.
Canada’s PM Carney has set September 8 for dollar-for-dollar retaliation targeting U.S. steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment and electronics.

The sweeping tariff package encompasses numerous product categories, including dairy products, alcoholic beverages, lumber materials, and textile goods.
Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the tariff implementation as an “attack” and a strategic “miscalculation.” He vowed to implement matching retaliatory measures effective September 8 to safeguard Canadian laborers, agricultural producers, and commercial enterprises.
President Trump took to social media platforms, declaring that “Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!”
Middle East Tensions Elevate Crude Prices and Inflation Concerns
Simultaneously, Washington finds itself embroiled in military confrontation with Tehran, with strategic dominance over the Strait of Hormuz representing the core flashpoint.
Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari cautioned that the ongoing hostilities are propelling petroleum costs higher and exacerbating inflationary pressures.
“The longer it goes on, the bigger effect it ends up having on the US economy and on inflation,” Kashkari stated during his CBS News appearance.
Brent crude surged 6.63% during the previous week, settling at $94.39 per barrel. Retail gasoline prices reached an average of $4.099 per gallon on Sunday, representing a significant increase from $3.150 twelve months prior.
Consumer price inflation registered at 3.4% for July. Kashkari expressed skepticism regarding the Federal Reserve’s ability to achieve its 2% inflation objective in the near term.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to unveil comprehensive economic sanctions targeting Iran on Monday. He characterized the forthcoming measures as “an economic D-Day.”
Market attention subsequently pivots to Nvidia on Wednesday. The semiconductor giant releases its second-quarter financial performance, with analysts viewing the disclosure as a critical indicator of sustained investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Wednesday’s economic calendar also features the July personal consumption expenditures data and an updated second-quarter gross domestic product calculation.
The Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium commences this week as well, contributing additional significance to an already event-packed period for financial markets.
