Oracle Uses Trucked Natural Gas to Maintain AI Data Centre Operations Amid Pipeline Delays

Oracle Corporation is resorting to trucking compressed natural gas to its artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in Utah and Texas to keep projects on schedule while awaiting pipeline construction. This decision comes as the company faces delays with its Project Jupiter in New Mexico, where a force majeure notice was sent to the project's developer last month due to pipeline setbacks. The urgency of maintaining operations has led Oracle to pay approximately four times the standard hub prices for trucked gas, highlighting the critical demand for energy in the AI sector.

The company has previously utilized trucked gas to power a data centre near Salt Lake City for over a year before a pipeline became operational. Similar measures are now being implemented at a facility being developed for OpenAI in Shackelford County, Texas. The high costs associated with trucked gas, which include labor and specialized equipment, underscore the challenges Oracle faces in scaling its energy supply to meet the demands of its AI infrastructure.

The situation reflects a broader trend where power supply has become a significant constraint on the expansion of AI capabilities, overshadowing even the availability of chips. Oracle's stock dropped approximately 5.5% following reports of these developments, indicating investor concern over potential delays in achieving positive free cash flow as the company invests heavily in expanding its data centre capacity. As the AI boom continues, the increasing demand for energy from data centres is expected to benefit pipeline operators and virtual pipeline providers.
