PBOC Expected to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.6951

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is anticipated to establish the daily USD/CNY reference rate at 6.6951, a key indicator closely monitored in Asian foreign exchange markets. This fixing, set around 0115 GMT, reflects a combination of factors including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic conditions. The PBOC operates a managed floating exchange rate system, allowing the yuan to fluctuate within a band of plus or minus 2% around the daily midpoint.

Recent actions by the PBOC have indicated a cautious approach to the yuan's appreciation. In late August, the central bank set its reference rate at the widest weak side deviation from market estimates in six months, following a three and a half year high for the yuan against the dollar. Analysts interpreted this move as a signal of discomfort with the rapid pace of the yuan's gains, suggesting that the PBOC is applying brakes rather than reversing the overall upward trend.

The balancing act for Chinese policymakers involves managing the benefits of a stronger currency, such as capital stability and reduced import costs, against the risks of diminished export competitiveness amid signs of economic softness. The gap between the daily fixing and market consensus estimates has become a crucial indicator for traders, providing insights into the PBOC's current stance on the yuan's value.
