Hedge Funds Shift to Long Positions on Yen Amid Market Volatility

Hedge funds have adopted a bullish stance on the Japanese yen for the first time since July 2025, following recent interventions by US and Japanese authorities to stabilize the currency. Data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission indicates that leveraged funds shifted from a net short position of approximately 53,000 contracts to a net long position of about 20,000 contracts, holding around ¥250 billion (approximately $1.6 billion) in bets on a stronger yen as of September 15.

This shift in sentiment occurred just before interest rate hikes by both the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan (BOJ) this week. However, the BOJ's lack of clear signals regarding future rate increases disappointed some market participants, contributing to a 1.3% decline in the yen on Friday, which later stabilized around 157 yen per dollar. The dollar also experienced its largest weekly gain in three months during this period.

In addition to hedge funds, asset managers increased their net long positions on the yen by about 54,000 contracts, bringing their total to roughly 55,000 contracts. The positioning data, which reflects market sentiment prior to the recent rate decisions, suggests that traders may face challenges if the yen continues to weaken, especially with Tokyo closed for Silver Week and market liquidity reduced. The next weekly report will provide further insights into whether funds maintained or adjusted their yen positions following the recent market fluctuations.
