RBA Chief Economist Signals Potential Interest Rate Hike Amid Inflation Concerns

The Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) chief economist, Sarah Hunter, has indicated that the central bank may need to raise interest rates for a fourth time this year due to persistent inflationary pressures. In a recent podcast, Hunter highlighted concerns that inflation has remained elevated for too long, risking its entrenchment in price-setting behavior across the economy. She identified rising energy costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and domestic demand outpacing supply as key factors contributing to potential inflation increases.

Markets are currently pricing in a 95% likelihood that the RBA will increase the cash rate to 4.60% at its upcoming meeting on September 29, with expectations that rates could peak at 4.85% by early next year. The RBA has already raised rates by 75 basis points since February, bringing the rate to a post-pandemic high of 4.35%. Core inflation remains at 3.6%, exceeding the RBA's target range of 2 to 3%.

Hunter also addressed the broader implications of interest rate changes, noting that while rate hikes primarily affect mortgage holders, they also influence the exchange rate and overall economic activity. She emphasized that rents are driven by local supply and demand rather than directly correlating with interest rates. Despite the potential for further rate increases, Hunter reassured that there are currently no systemic signs of mortgage distress, as a significant portion of households are ahead on their mortgage repayments. The RBA's next meeting will provide an opportunity to reassess the situation and respond to ongoing inflation risks.
