Goldman Sachs Raises S&P 500 Year-End Target to 8,000 Amid Hyperscaler Spending Concerns

Goldman Sachs has increased its year-end 2026 target for the S&P 500 to 8,000, up from a previous target of 7,600. This adjustment is supported by a revised earnings per share forecast of $340, indicating a projected annual profit growth of 24% for the index. Chief US equity strategist Ben Snider highlighted a robust first quarter, where aggregate S&P 500 earnings grew by 18% year over year, marking the strongest quarterly growth in a decade, excluding the 2018 tax cut surge and the post-pandemic reopening.

Despite this positive outlook, Snider cautioned that the forecast is heavily reliant on the capital spending decisions of a few major hyperscale companies. A reduction in spending by just two or three of these firms could significantly impact profit growth. NVIDIA's recent financial results exemplify this dependency, with the company reporting $96.2 billion in revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, a 106% increase from the previous year. Notably, over 92% of NVIDIA's sales were derived from compute infrastructure sold to hyperscale buyers, underscoring the concentration of revenue sources.

Goldman's proprietary positioning indicator, which tracks institutional investors, has dropped to its lowest level since March 2026. Snider described this decline as a stabilizing factor, suggesting that less crowded exposure could mitigate potential market selloffs. The upcoming third quarter results and fiscal 2027 capital spending plans from major companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta are expected to serve as critical indicators for future index-level earnings. Snider emphasized that until the enterprise adoption of AI tools translates into tangible financial results, the sustainability of Goldman's 8,000 target will largely depend on a narrow set of corporate spending decisions.
