PBOC Expected to Set USD/CNY Reference Rate at 6.6989

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is anticipated to establish the USD/CNY reference rate at 6.6989, a key indicator closely monitored in Asian foreign exchange markets. This daily fixing, set around 0115 GMT, reflects a combination of factors including the previous day's closing price, movements in major currencies, and domestic economic conditions. Recently, the PBOC has signaled a desire to moderate the pace of the yuan's appreciation, particularly after it reached a three and a half year high against the dollar in late August.

In late August, the PBOC set its fixing at the widest weak side deviation from market estimates in six months, indicating discomfort with the rapid gains of the yuan. Analysts interpreted this move as the central bank applying brakes on the currency's appreciation rather than reversing the overall upward trend. The yuan has still appreciated significantly against the dollar this year, highlighting the PBOC's focus on managing the speed of its rise to avoid potential negative impacts on export competitiveness amid signs of economic softness in China.

China operates a managed floating exchange rate system, allowing the yuan to trade within a band of plus or minus 2% around the daily midpoint. The PBOC retains the discretion to intervene in the market through various means, including direct buying or selling of yuan, to maintain stability. The gap between the daily fixing and market consensus estimates serves as a critical gauge for traders to assess the central bank's current stance on currency management.
