Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor to Address Inflation and Interest Rates

Andrew Hauser, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), is scheduled to speak today at 12:45 PM Sydney time. His remarks come in the context of the RBA's recent monetary policy decisions, including three interest rate hikes in early 2026 that raised the cash rate to 4.35 percent. The RBA has maintained this rate during its last two meetings, with a conditional pause rather than a definitive end to tightening measures.

Inflation remains a significant concern for the RBA, with the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported at approximately 3.8 percent as of the June quarter, exceeding the target range of 2-3 percent. Hauser has emphasized that the Board has ongoing work to do in managing inflation, despite some relief from declining fuel costs. He has also referenced the Phillips curve to justify the RBA's proactive approach to interest rate hikes, aiming to mitigate potential unemployment costs.

Two key factors complicate the RBA's inflation strategy: wage growth and external economic pressures. Recent data indicates that private sector wage growth has moderated to 3.2 percent annually, providing some flexibility for the Board. However, an anticipated 4.75 percent increase in award wages could counteract this trend. Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have raised concerns about oil prices, which could further complicate domestic inflation dynamics. Hauser's comments today may clarify whether the RBA is considering further rate hikes or if it will allow current policies to take effect.
