San Francisco Fed President Discusses Inflation Risks and Future Rate Hikes

Mary Daly, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, shared insights on the potential for further interest rate hikes during an interview with Axios. She emphasized that the persistence of inflation risks, particularly those related to artificial intelligence (AI), tariffs, and energy prices, will significantly influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions. Daly noted that supply pressures from AI could extend beyond the typical one-to-three-year period expected for such shocks to dissipate, complicating the Fed's outlook.

Daly highlighted that some businesses are proactively securing future supplies of memory chips and redesigning their products to lessen dependence on these components. This shift is crucial as the demand for AI technology may compete with the needs of other sectors, such as automotive and consumer goods, potentially spreading inflationary pressures beyond data centers. She expressed concern that increased borrowing could make large technology firms more vulnerable to rising financing costs, even if they are less sensitive to interest rate changes.

While Daly supported the recent rate hike in September due to heightened inflation risks, she refrained from committing to additional increases. She indicated that if the pressures from tariffs and energy prices prove to be temporary, further tightening may not be necessary. However, she acknowledged that another round of tariffs could introduce new shocks before the effects of previous measures have fully played out, warranting close monitoring of the labor market and inflation trends. The Fed's future actions will depend on whether these inflationary pressures subside or continue to escalate.
