September Non-Farm Payrolls Expected to Show Significant Job Growth

The upcoming release of the September non-farm payrolls is anticipated to reveal a substantial increase in employment, with a consensus estimate of 910,000 new jobs added. This figure is notably higher than the 162,000 jobs reported in August and the 21,000 in July. Private sector job growth is also expected, with estimates suggesting an addition of 85,000 jobs for the month.

The unemployment rate is projected to remain steady at 4.1%, consistent with previous figures. Analysts are also forecasting a year-over-year increase in average hourly earnings of 3.2%, slightly up from 3.1% in the prior month. Additionally, average weekly hours are expected to average 34.3, down marginally from 34.4 previously reported.

Data leading up to the payrolls report indicates mixed signals. The ADP employment report showed an increase of 90,000 jobs, surpassing expectations, while initial jobless claims fell to 196,000, down from 206,000 last month. However, other indicators such as the Challenger Job Cuts report revealed a decrease in job cuts, suggesting a more stable employment environment. The Federal Reserve is closely monitoring these figures, with current market pricing reflecting a 30% chance of a rate hike at the end of October, a figure that has decreased recently due to dovish comments from Fed officials.
