US Job Cuts Decline in September Amid Weak Hiring Trends

In September 2026, US employers announced 43,281 job cuts, representing an 18% decrease from August and a 20% decline compared to the same month last year. This figure marks the lowest total for September since 2022, when 29,989 layoffs were recorded. The technology sector continues to lead in layoffs, with 10,799 job cuts reported in September, a significant increase of 77% from the previous month.

Despite the reduction in layoffs, hiring trends appear less optimistic. Employers announced plans to hire 90,787 workers in September, down 23% from a year ago, marking the weakest September hiring total since 2011. Notably, the anticipated surge in holiday-season hiring has not materialized, raising concerns about the overall job market.

The upcoming non-farm payrolls (NFP) report is expected to draw significant attention, with analysts predicting an increase of around 90,000 jobs in September and an unemployment rate steady at 4.1%. This follows a report from ADP indicating a rise in private payrolls by 90,000, surpassing expectations. While neither the ADP nor Challenger reports directly correlate with the NFP figures, they suggest a cautious approach from employers rather than a significant pullback in hiring.
