Social Unrest in France and Beyond Pressures European Markets

Protests in France, which began weeks ago over poor school conditions, have escalated into violent clashes with police, looting, and arson. These demonstrations are fueled by rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of living. France's budget deficit reached 5.1% of GDP in 2025, with public debt nearing 120%, limiting the government's ability to provide support to households. In response, the French government is proposing €54 billion in spending cuts for its 2027 budget, but implementing these cuts amid ongoing social unrest poses significant challenges.

The unrest has spread beyond France, with demonstrations occurring in Liège, Belgium, and other cities across Wallonia and Brussels, as well as in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, and Austria. While many protests have remained peaceful, the situation is exerting pressure on European bond markets and the EUR/USD currency pair. In France, long-term government bond yields have risen to 5.5%, surpassing U.S. yields for the first time since 2013, and the cost of insuring against a French default has reached its highest level since that year.

European equities are also facing downward pressure, exacerbated by rising energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, and concerns regarding returns on investments in artificial intelligence. Despite these challenges, there is potential for a strong earnings season, with consensus estimates predicting a 20.7% earnings growth for the STOXX Europe 600, driven by sectors such as energy, technology, and industrials. However, the overall economic outlook remains uncertain, as inflation risks persist and central banks may need to maintain a hawkish stance, complicating the financial landscape.
