South Korean Kospi Rises Amid Chip Demand; Japan's Nikkei Gains Under Scrutiny

South Korea's Kospi index experienced a significant increase of approximately 2.9%, reaching around 6,880, with intraday highs of about 3.5%, marking its highest level since August 27. This surge was primarily driven by major chip manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which rose by 3.7% and 6% respectively, fueled by optimism surrounding AI investment demand. The Korean won also strengthened, hitting its highest level since October 2024, as foreign investors purchased roughly 790 billion won, equivalent to about $590 million, in shares.

In contrast, Japan's Nikkei index rose about 2.3% to approximately 66,500, attributed to calmer bond markets and a steadier yen. However, this rationale faces scrutiny as Wall Street experienced a decline on the same day, driven by a robust US jobs report that increased the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike. Only the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index saw gains, complicating the narrative of a broad market rally in Japan.

Additionally, South Korea's government bond yields for both three-year and ten-year notes edged slightly lower, diverging from the upward pressure observed in global bond markets. This suggests that domestic demand for Korean debt may be holding up, contrasting with concerns about a shrinking pool of reliable buyers for government bonds in other countries. The dynamics in South Korea's financial markets present a clearer picture compared to the more complex situation in Japan.
