Stablecoin-Powered Card Transactions Surpass $1 Billion Monthly Threshold
Key Highlights
- Monthly cryptocurrency card transactions hit $1.04 billion in July, representing a more than threefold increase from the previous year
- Dollar-pegged stablecoins USDC and USDT powered over 70% of the month’s 10 million-plus transactions
- Mean transaction value climbed to $86, a significant jump from $59 recorded twelve months prior
- Three major platforms—RedotPay, EtherFi, and KAST—commanded approximately 77% of total measured activity
- Latin American markets are experiencing rapid uptake, with food and grocery purchases leading spending patterns
Monthly cryptocurrency card expenditure crossed the $1 billion threshold in July, marking a significant milestone as stablecoins increasingly power ordinary consumer transactions. According to Paymentscan data referenced by venture capital firm a16z, monthly transaction volume reached $1.04 billion, representing substantial growth from comparable figures twelve months earlier.
U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins dominated transaction activity throughout the period. USDC commanded a 50.8% share of July’s total volume, with USDT capturing an additional 20.3%. Combined, these two stablecoins facilitated more than seven out of every ten transactions among the month’s 10 million-plus tracked payments.
Individual transaction values showed notable expansion as well. The mean payment amount reached approximately $86 in July, marking a substantial increase from the $59 average recorded during the same month in 2024. Total monthly volume stood at $306 million in July 2025, based on the identical dataset.
Platform concentration remains pronounced within the ecosystem. RedotPay processed $395.1 million of July’s aggregate volume. EtherFi captured $100.3 million in transactions, while KAST contributed $89.6 million. These three service providers collectively represented approximately 77% of all monitored expenditure.
Visa announced in June that it had launched or was developing over 160 stablecoin-connected card programs across global markets. StraitsX, operating as a Visa partner, reported that transaction throughput on its card infrastructure surged fortyfold when comparing the final quarters of 2024 and 2025.
Routine Consumer Purchases Fuel Expansion
Transaction category analysis reveals a pronounced movement toward everyday consumer spending. Binance disclosed that its Brazilian card user base expanded 53% from initial launch through the second quarter of 2026, with corresponding volume growth of 80%. Primary spending categories encompassed transportation services, meal delivery, supermarket purchases, dining establishments, and digital subscription services.
Kraken shared that its Krak Card platform witnessed weekly transaction frequency more than double annually, reaching 8.3 payments per active user. Retail and in-store transactions represented 59.3% of total card expenditure.
Oobit’s data indicated that active Brazilian customers averaged approximately $400 in spending distributed across 20 monthly transactions. Supermarket purchases accounted for 35% of regional transaction activity. In Argentina, food-related spending comprised 41% of all transactions, with USDT serving as the payment method for 72% of purchases.
Emerging Markets Show Accelerated Adoption Rates
StraitsX documented gross transaction value growth of roughly 600% across lower-GDP territories during the March 2025 to February 2026 timeframe. Markets with higher GDP levels experienced 150% expansion during the identical window. Food and retail categories dominated spending patterns across both economic segments.
Coinbase revealed that USDC represented approximately 16% of aggregate card transaction volume. Active Coinbase One cardholders maintained average monthly spending of roughly $3,000 spanning USDC, alternative cryptocurrencies, and traditional bank transfers. The platform currently holds $20 billion in USDC across its product suite, reflecting 44% annual growth.
RedotPay disclosed customer base expansion exceeding 33% across a six-month period, surpassing 8 million registered users. The euro-denominated EURe stablecoin, which previously represented 88% of monitored card spending during early 2024, contracted to under 2% of total volume by July.
Cryptocurrency card systems function by executing stablecoin-to-fiat conversions at the point of sale, ensuring merchants continue receiving payment in local currency. This architecture positions stablecoins as funding mechanisms for established payment networks rather than direct replacements.
