      Breakdown in US-Canada Trade Negotiations

Escalating friction with America’s northern neighbor is contributing to market unease. Negotiations between Washington and Ottawa fell apart during the weekend, prompting the United States to implement additional tariffs on Canadian exports.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney halted talks and committed to imposing reciprocal tariffs on American products.

Major equity benchmarks all closed in negative territory last week. Market participants remain concerned about elevated long-dated Treasury yields, America’s growing debt burden, and escalating geopolitical risks tied to energy security.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield dipped modestly Monday, declining 3.4 basis points to reach 4.702%. The 30-year bond yield, which touched a 19-year peak of 5.337% during the previous week, stood at 5.236%.

Energy markets showed movement as well. Brent crude futures decreased 1.2% to $91.52 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate fell 1.8% to $85.53. Crude benchmarks had rallied over 5% in the prior week.

Treasury to Announce Iran Economic Measures

The current administration is preparing to intensify financial pressure on Tehran. In a Financial Times opinion piece, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent characterized the upcoming actions as “an economic D-Day, the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary.”

Bessent had arranged a press briefing for 2 p.m. Eastern time Monday to reveal specifics about the new economic restrictions targeting Iran.

The strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, through which substantial oil volumes pass, remains disrupted due to continuing regional hostilities. Authorities have not provided a timeline for resumption of normal shipping operations.

      Nvidia Results Take Center Stage

Nvidia is scheduled to release its quarterly figures Wednesday after market close. Wall Street views the semiconductor giant as a bellwether for artificial intelligence investment trends, and its performance is anticipated to influence sentiment across the technology sector.

Marvell Technology will follow with its earnings report Thursday. Those numbers will provide additional insight into spending patterns for AI-related infrastructure.

The Federal Reserve’s prominent Jackson Hole Economic Symposium kicks off Thursday. Market participants will scrutinize commentary from central bank policymakers for hints regarding the monetary policy trajectory.

Financial markets enter the week confronting numerous simultaneous headwinds. High borrowing costs, deteriorating trade relationships, instability in the Middle East, and pivotal earnings announcements are all converging simultaneously.
