U.S. Economic Growth Slows Amid Rising Inflation Pressures, Fed's Beige Book Reports
The latest Beige Book from the Federal Reserve indicates a slowdown in economic growth across the United States, with nine of the twelve districts reporting varying degrees of growth. Specifically, two districts noted moderate growth, three reported modest growth, four saw slight growth, and three experienced no change. This contrasts with August's report, which showed ten districts growing and two unchanged. Consumer spending has largely stagnated, with most districts reporting little or no change, and employment figures remained stable with three districts showing modest gains, five slight, and four unchanged.
Price pressures have intensified, with three districts reporting robust price growth and eight noting moderate increases. The report highlights that four districts observed an acceleration in the pace of price increases, driven by rising oil prices, particularly diesel. Concerns about inflation are growing, as firms anticipate further price hikes when existing contracts are renegotiated. Philadelphia's future price indexes reflect the highest readings in 35 years, indicating widespread inflationary pressures not seen since the pandemic.
The report also points to a shift in consumer behavior, with spending increasingly concentrated among high-income households. Lower-income families are feeling financial strain, which has begun to affect middle-income households as well. Nonprofits in Cleveland reported that 87% of their clients' financial situations have worsened. Additionally, rising mortgage rates have further slowed the housing market, and concerns about economic conditions have led to a more pessimistic outlook among bankers in Dallas. The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to meet on October 27-28, and the current economic indicators may influence discussions on potential interest rate hikes.
