Uber (UBER) Stock Gains Momentum With London Self-Driving Taxi Rollout
Key Highlights
- Uber rolled out its inaugural self-driving taxi service in London through a partnership with UK AI startup Wayve
- The program utilizes Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles, beginning with under 20 cars in the fleet
- Each vehicle maintains a safety operator; no specific date has been set for completely autonomous operations
- This marks Uber’s second robotaxi deployment in Europe, following its Zagreb partnership with Pony.AI
- Analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus on UBER stock, with a mean price target of $104.04, suggesting 36% potential upside
Uber introduced its inaugural autonomous ride-hailing service in London this Thursday through a collaboration with British artificial intelligence firm Wayve. UBER stock finished Wednesday’s trading session at $76.45, representing a 1.61% increase, and continued climbing 0.6% in after-hours trading to reach $76.89.
The pilot program launches with under 20 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles equipped with Wayve’s autonomous driving technology. Passengers booking through UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric services may be paired with these self-driving vehicles without additional fees.
Throughout the program’s initial phase, a certified safety operator will stay in the driver’s seat. This operator maintains the ability to intervene or engage the brakes when needed.
According to Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s head of autonomous mobility, the company continues working toward full driverless approval through the UK government’s regulatory pilot program. A specific timeline for completely autonomous operations remains undisclosed.
London presents particularly challenging conditions for self-driving vehicle technology. Cramped streets, congested traffic patterns, public buses, cyclists, and electric bikes create a complex operating landscape for autonomous cars.
Uber’s Expanding Autonomous Vehicle Strategy
This London deployment represents Uber’s second robotaxi market across Europe. The company initially entered the European autonomous vehicle space in Zagreb through a collaboration with Chinese technology company Pony.AI.
Uber has committed to introducing over 2,000 Pony.AI robotaxis throughout European markets. Meanwhile, in Dubai, completely autonomous Baidu vehicles currently transport Uber riders without safety drivers.
Uber’s strategic approach involves collaborating with autonomous vehicle technology providers instead of developing proprietary self-driving systems. This model allows AV companies to tap into Uber’s established rider base while Uber sidesteps the substantial expenses associated with in-house technology development.
The partnership between Wayve and Uber originated in 2024 and included a financial investment from Uber. Both organizations have outlined plans for geographical expansion into additional markets moving forward.
Intensifying Competition in London’s Autonomous Market
Uber faces growing competition in the London market. Both Alphabet’s Waymo division and Baidu are positioning themselves to launch commercial passenger transportation services in the city.
This development positions London as a potentially competitive battleground where multiple autonomous vehicle platforms will operate simultaneously.
Cambridge-based Wayve stands among the limited number of UK companies developing comprehensive AI-powered driving systems. The company’s technology platform is engineered for adaptability across various vehicle models and diverse road conditions.
Wall Street analysts maintain a Strong Buy consensus rating on UBER stock. This assessment reflects 29 Buy recommendations, three Hold ratings, and zero Sell ratings issued during the previous three months.
The consensus price target sits at $104.04, indicating approximately 36% upside potential from present price levels.
