UK Services PMI Shows Sluggish Growth Amid Inflationary Pressures

The UK’s flash services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for September registered at 51.7, slightly below the expected 52.0 and down from the previous month's figure of 52.5. The manufacturing PMI also showed a modest increase, coming in at 52.0, surpassing expectations of 51.5. The composite PMI, which combines both services and manufacturing, matched the services PMI at 51.7, indicating a slowdown in economic activity.

Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, highlighted concerns regarding the current economic climate. He noted that the combination of sluggish growth and rising inflationary pressures is creating a challenging environment for businesses. High energy prices, increased operational costs, and geopolitical uncertainties are contributing to subdued business confidence and a reluctance to hire, with economic growth now estimated at a mere 0.1% quarterly rate.

Williamson further emphasized that the Bank of England may maintain a hawkish stance due to rising price pressures, despite the lackluster growth figures. The ongoing uncertainty surrounding government policy, particularly in light of the upcoming autumn Budget, adds to the challenges faced by businesses in the UK.
