US Dollar Fluctuates Ahead of Key CPI Data Release

The US dollar experienced a brief surge on Friday following the release of the Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) report, which indicated job growth in August nearly tripling the expected figure of 56,000. However, these gains were short-lived as market attention shifted towards the upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, which is anticipated to have a significant impact on Federal Reserve policy decisions.

Federal Reserve official Christopher Waller stated that he would support maintaining current interest rates unless the CPI shows unexpectedly high inflation. This week is critical for traders as they await the CPI release, with expectations that a soft or in-line CPI could weaken the dollar, while a surprising increase in inflation could lead to a rally in the currency.

On the European side, the European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to raise interest rates by 25 basis points in its upcoming meeting, bringing the policy rate to 2.50%. However, there are indications that the ECB may not signal further tightening beyond this increase, which could lead to a reassessment of market expectations regarding future rate hikes. As a result, the EUR/USD pair is likely to be influenced more by developments in the US dollar in the near term.
