US Dollar Mixed Against Major Currencies Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The US dollar exhibited mixed performance against major currencies at the start of trading, with the euro declining by 0.13% and the British pound down 0.20% against the dollar. In contrast, the Japanese yen strengthened, resulting in a 0.35% decrease in the USDJPY pair. The New Zealand dollar experienced a significant drop of 1.12% despite a recent interest rate hike by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), which raised its cash rate by 25 basis points to 2.75%.

The geopolitical landscape has been affected by escalating tensions between the US and Iran, leading to military exchanges that have raised concerns about regional stability. CENTCOM confirmed the completion of strikes against Iranian military facilities, while Iran reported retaliatory actions that included missile interceptions in Jordan and drone strikes in Kuwait. The situation has resulted in casualties, including two Filipino sailors who died in an attack on a shipping vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

In the commodities market, crude oil prices remain elevated, trading at approximately $89.50 per barrel, following a surge of 5.20% the previous day. The rising oil prices are contributing to inflationary pressures, influencing bond markets and supporting the dollar while negatively impacting equity markets. The RBNZ's cautious approach to monetary policy aims to manage inflation without hindering New Zealand's economic recovery, which remains uneven due to varying performance across sectors.
