US Dollar Weakens as Investors Shift to Gold and Bitcoin Amid Fiscal Concerns

The US dollar is facing significant pressure and is on track for a weekly loss as investors react to the Treasury's expanded bond buyback plan, viewing it as a temporary measure rather than a long-term solution to the nation's fiscal challenges. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that further increases in Treasury repurchases may be forthcoming, following the announcement that the government would double its buybacks of longer-dated securities in an effort to manage rising yields. However, these measures have not alleviated concerns about the deteriorating fiscal landscape, leading to skepticism regarding the effectiveness of US policy interventions.

In response to the weakening dollar, the euro has reached a three-month high, while the British pound is nearing a six-month peak. The New Zealand dollar is also set for a weekly gain of over 1%, its highest level since early June. The Australian dollar has advanced as well, although the Japanese yen has slipped, pressured by the widening interest rate differentials between the US and Japan. Analysts suggest that the ongoing fiscal issues are prompting investors to seek alternatives to dollar assets, leading to increased hedging and diversification.

The bond market reflects a similar skepticism, with the 30-year Treasury yield rising to approximately 5.25% and the 10-year yield stabilizing around 4.70%. Goldman Sachs has noted that while policymakers have tools to influence long-term yields, the current challenges appear to be more fiscal than technical, diminishing the effectiveness of yield suppression strategies. As US government debt surpasses $40 trillion, some investors are turning to gold and bitcoin as safer stores of value. Bitcoin is poised for a 17% weekly gain, marking its largest increase in two and a half years, while gold is expected to see a weekly rise of more than 3%.
