US President Trump Raises Concerns Over Yen Weakness in Meeting with Japan's Takaichi
During a recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, concerns regarding the weakness of the yen were prominently discussed. Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama reported that Takaichi acknowledged the issue, stating that an undervalued yen poses significant problems. This exchange highlights a growing political consensus in both Tokyo and Washington regarding the yen's depreciation, which has implications for currency traders.
Following the summit, the USD/JPY exchange rate experienced a slight decline, easing from approximately 158.70 to around 158.40. Katayama noted that while she refrained from commenting on specific exchange-rate levels or potential rate checks—actions often interpreted as preemptive warnings before intervention—the discussions signal a heightened awareness of intervention risks in the currency market. Traders are now more cautious about pursuing positions that chase the USD/JPY above 159, given the potential for coordinated action between the two nations.
The backdrop of these discussions is further complicated by the Bank of Japan's recent decision to raise its policy rate to 1.25%, aimed at achieving its inflation target. This shift in monetary policy, coupled with the US Treasury's previous purchases of yen to manage rising borrowing costs, adds layers of complexity to the currency dynamics. Despite the modest market reaction, with US 10-year yields remaining above 5.2%, the interest rate differential continues to favor the dollar, leaving traders uncertain about the likelihood of intervention from Tokyo.
