US Private Sector Growth Remains Strong in September, Driven by Technology

The S&P Global Composite Index for the United States recorded a reading of 58.4 in September, matching the preliminary estimate and indicating robust growth in the private sector. This figure is a significant increase from the previous month's reading of 56.0. The Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) also showed strength, rising to 58.8 from a preliminary 50.7, reflecting continued expansion in the services sector.

A notable highlight was the technology business activity index, which surged to 62.0, marking the fastest expansion since June 2021. The industrials output index also saw a sharp increase, climbing to 58.6, the highest growth rate in over five years. All seven sectors surveyed reported expansion, with basic materials and consumer goods showing particularly strong momentum, while healthcare returned to growth for the first time since June, although it remained the weakest sector overall.

Despite the positive growth indicators, concerns about rising input costs were noted, particularly in the technology sector, where companies experienced the fastest increase in input prices in just over four years. This inflationary pressure complicates the economic outlook, as stronger activity could support earnings expectations, but higher costs may lead the Federal Reserve to maintain a cautious stance on monetary policy.
