US Services Sector Growth Slows in September Amid Rising Inflation

The US services sector experienced continued expansion in September, although the pace of growth has slowed. The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported that the Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) decreased to 54.9 from 55.4 in August, marking the 27th consecutive month of expansion. Despite the decline, the index remains above the neutral level of 50, indicating ongoing growth in the sector.

Key components of the report showed mixed results. Business activity fell significantly to 56.5, down from 61.7, while new orders also eased to 59.8 from 60.9, suggesting solid demand remains but at a reduced pace. Employment figures showed a slight recovery, edging up to 50.1 after two months of contraction, indicating a return to modest job growth. Backlogs of orders increased to 56.6, the highest level since July 2022, suggesting that businesses still have significant work to process.

Inflationary pressures are becoming a growing concern, with the prices index rising to 74.0, the highest since July 2022. Respondents frequently cited rising fuel costs, tariffs, and supply constraints as factors contributing to increased expenses and longer delivery times. Additionally, new export orders fell sharply into contraction at 46.9, indicating potential challenges for US businesses in international markets. The mixed signals from the report suggest that while the services sector is expanding, rising costs and a slowdown in activity could influence future economic policy decisions by the Federal Reserve.
