US Treasury Auctions $70 Billion in Five-Year Notes at 5.033% Yield

The U.S. Treasury successfully auctioned $70 billion in five-year notes, achieving a high yield of 5.033%. This yield was higher than the when-issued (WI) yield of 5.002% noted just prior to the auction, resulting in a tail of 3.1 basis points, significantly above the average of 0.6 basis points observed in the last six auctions.

The auction's bid-to-cover ratio was recorded at 2.21 times, lower than the average of 2.33 times. Direct bidders accounted for 29.92% of the auction, surpassing the average of 21.8%, while indirect bidders represented 54.31%, below their average of 65.2%. Dealers took on a larger share than usual, holding 15.77% compared to the average of 12.9%.

Despite the increase in direct bids, the overall demand was weaker, leading to an auction grade of D. The notable tail indicates that buyers required a higher yield than anticipated to absorb the offered notes, reflecting a cautious market sentiment.
